The Notice to Air Men (I refuse to use Air Missions) system is apparently down.
“The FAA is working to restore its Notice to Air Missions System. We are performing final validation checks and reloading the system now. Operations across the National Airspace System are affected,” the agency tweeted. “We will provide frequent updates as we make progress.”
All planes are temporarily grounded throughout the US (not sure if this affects military). Although this affects all commercial and general aviation flights, it hits GA particularly hard since they need those notices to avoid ‘hot’ areas around military bases as well as to know which airports’ runways are functioning or if their fuel pumps are running.
Where is Mayor Pete–surely this is interfering with his travel plans??
ETA: From B:
Legally no plane can leave for any flight unless the pilot has acquainted himself with all information about conditions along the route and each airport.
Without that NOTAM data, you can’t do that. This includes such things as runway/taxi closure equipment malfunctions (like ILS or approach lighting) or GPS outages or other issues. without that it becomes(legally) a Safety of Flight issue.
Checking NOTAMS is a part of flight planning that takes place BEFORE the flight. Plus the pilots cannot legally do a flight that they have not prepared for.
Also, I was in error above–NOTAMs are not for hot areas around military bases.
