Columbia University, one of the Ivy League universities, got busted by one of its own faculty members ginning up numbers for US News and World Report’s College ranking, thereby pushing them into the number 2 spot.
Given the fact that the US News rankings are created through some esoteric and arcane number crunching anyway (a large part of the ranking is a survey of university presidents’ opinions about the best schools in the US so no wonder the Ivies, along with MIT are always at the top) then this was basically scamming the scammers.
Stuff like this happens a lot but claiming that 100% of your faculty have terminal degrees is pretty much a clue that something is rotten in the Big Apple. In data any 100% figure should be looked at for errors.
Columbia is really, really, really sorry and pinky swears that they won’t do it again. They join a line of universities who have falsified information, including the University of Illinois Law school in order to ranking-climb.
