I alluded to traveling through the Midwest in my Independence Day post but thought I’d spend some more time detailing some of my adventures.
I had to go from Indiana to Missouri for work–about a nine hour drive one way. So I saw quite a bit of countryside during that time. Plus I got to practice my mad NASCAR-like skills (I was taught by the best). Firstly, I like to drive fast. The speed limit is a suggestion rather than a rule. Secondly, I hate That Guy who comes up in the lane that’s being closed due to construction and tries to jam in at the last minute. Apparently others don’t appreciate it either. At one construction area, three of us snugged up like we were running the top line at Talladega (some call it tailgating, I call it drafting). Dude had three choices: eat a barrier, wreck us, or get behind me. He chose… wisely…. It was like magic.
The trip was relatively uneventful both ways. I wouldn’t recommend going across on Indiana 17 through Kankakee at night. There were Tesla charging stations at the Casey’s Store in Dwight and five out of six were being used. As a traveling tip, don’t use the bathrooms at the gas station–find a nearby fast food joint, or, better yet, a Walgreens.
Missouri was odd. They bale the medians in their state roads, which is a good idea, but kind of weird. Getting out of the state feels like it takes forever. Kind of like the hallway in Poltergeist–the road just gets loooooonnnnger and won’t let you get to the border.
Stopped at the Cozy Dog in Springfield, IL. Been there forever and is on old Route 66 which is Sixth Ave in Springfield. Good food, highly recommend, if you’re running along Interstate 72.
B watched the cats, so no worries there (even swept the garage, a definite bonus!). Took one worry of travel off my mind for sure.
Was away too long, but got there and back again safely which is what counts.
