Brandon and Company don’t seem to be able to see the possible consequences of their actions. The specter of ‘forgiving’ federal student loans via executive order fiat has risen from the dead (nothwithstanding the fact that even Pelosi said it would be illegal).
It’s a bad idea on several fronts–you might get kudos from a very small portion of the population and piss off an exponential number of others. I don’t know that I would appreciate my tax dollars going to pay for some miscreant’s 14th century French literature degree or, heaven forbid, any degree with social justice in the title.
So that money would have to come from somewhere that’s not the individual taxpayer. The logical place would be the institutions that received that money in the first place–colleges and universities. The bigger ones or the more exclusive institutions would be able to take the hit. States would have to figure out if they would prioritize higher ed for state schools and their missions would definitely get a closer look (maybe guys like this will actually get fired).
The smaller private colleges teetering on the edge anyway, buh-bye.
It would never get that far due to lawsuits, etc., but it would solve a lot of problems and create a reset in the industry of higher education. Which it desperately needs.
