Oberlin College hasn’t paid the money they owe to Gibson Bakery (the court ordered it paid by April 1). They say that are ‘exploring their options’. Not sure how that’s going to end for them, but it won’t end well. They’ve lost twice in court. Their only recourse is the Ohio State Supreme Court and that’s a crapshoot on whether or not they’ll take the case if requested. Can’t say at this point they have a lot of ‘options’ unless they are trying to figure out how to keep the college afloat using Chapter 11.
It might be that the first judge guessed they go all shenanigans which is why he made them put up a bond. Maybe they figure since they offloaded the Dean of Students who not only printed out libelous flyers on university equipment, but who also offered reimbursement to students for ‘protesting materials’, that they are in the clear. (As a note to readers–I’d avoid Oglethorpe College in Georgia if I were you since that’s where the former Oberlin dean of students–Meredeth Raimondo went).
Why any parent would send a child there or why the alums are not completely up in arms about the actions of the college, I’m not sure. It will be a hit to the city if the college closes, but they should survive just all the same without that albatross in their midst.
