Oberlin College loses again

Gibson’s Bakery’s victory against Oberlin College was affirmed by the Ohio Court of Appeals last week.  The article at Legal Insurrection gives a better breakdown but it goes like this:

Gibson’s Bakery was constantly the target of shoplifters from Oberlin for years.  They regularly had the student shoplifters arrested.  They caught a black student shoplifting and when the student was caught, a couple of other black students jumped in and a small melee began.  The students were arrested.  The dread race card was laid on the table, the Dean of Students at the College weaponized the student body against the bakery, and the College ended a long-standing contract with Gibson’s.
Gibson’s sued and won–$11 million plus punitive damages worth another $11 million.  It would have been more, but state law capped the award.  Oberlin crossed the line from free speech to libel.  Oberlin’s legal counsel screwed the pooch and gave the Gibson’s a chance to prove actual malice, which they did to the satisfaction of the jury.
A couple of things to note:  Gibson’s is a family owned and run bakery. The grandfather just passed at age 93.  The father died in 2019 of cancer.  It seems that Oberlin tried to stretch the process out, knowing that his condition was terminal.  Neither Oberlin nor its Board of Trustees have apologized and, to my mind, have been entitled libs schmucks the entire ride.  To the best of my knowledge, the Dean of Students is still employed by Oberlin.
Read the whole thing at the link above.  It’s good to see that justice did prevail.
I know that a $22 million judgement (that they will finally need to pay out) would tap out the endowments of many small colleges since endowments have a lot of restricted funds that can only be used for a particular purpose by the college–dumbassery doesn’t count.
It is my hope that this will send Oberlin into bankruptcy and that it will close since I can’t imagine the type of ‘education’ its students are getting.  Good riddance if it does happen.

  1. I know that they have a huge endowment for a midwest college. I had thought they would escape, slightly poorer. But this gives me hope. Thanks
