They were supposed to be cautionary tales, not handbooks

Name your favorites in the comments!

My most favorite is Fahrenheit 451.

Considering the way that the government is trying to control the actions of the populace, House of Stairs comes to mind as well.  In New South Wales, unvaxxed Aussies can’t drink alcohol while standing.  Because safety?

Mandatory reading for all children:  The Children’s Story by James Clavell.

  1. 1984 Still a classic on governmental dis-information and control.I will say we read Lord of the Flies in 8th grade then watched the B&W movie. Our English teacher asked what we thought about it and the boys universally said they would love to live on the island. Hunting pigs, fishing, swimming no curfews, what fun!I do believe we made her cry.

  5. “1984” remains my favorite. First read it so many years ago in the 10th grade. However, Heinlein's “Starship Troopers” shaped my political philosophy.

  6. MAJMike–1984 does remain towards the top of my list as well. Heinlein's ideas, especially political, did have an effect on me as well as other folks I know.
