So, Juneteenth. The new Federal holiday? Seriously?!?

So despite the fact that the press insists that this ‘holiday’ is already celebrated in 47 states, I’d never heard of it until a couple of years ago.  It is the day that Texas abolished slavery, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.  Not really anymore a federal or multi-state thing any more than Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday.

I’ve got a couple of issues with this new federal day off.

Firstly but not most importantly:  the rollout.  Signed on Thursday the 17th of June; all Federal employees get the 18th of June off.  With about an hour’s notice.  So everyone who had appointments, were planning on calling the IRS, etc. are now SoL.  Expecting mail?  Nope.  You’re SoL too.

The ’emergency’ agenda item in the CDC’s June 18th meeting. Not so much an emergency.  They’re cancelling the meeting and will be moving this to their June 23-25 meeting.  So all of those young men with heart issues or the ones that could be avoided by pulling back on the injection push.  SoL too.

And now the real kicker, the actual official name of this new day off:  Juneteenth National Independence Day.

No.  National Independence Day is July 4.  I believe that the name of this new day off is designed to undermine and smear our true National Independence Day.  Here’s some comments that illustrate what I mean:

****

Markey from MA: Juneteenth: “reflects the unfulfilled promise of a nation built upon the notion that all are created equal, and it has its roots in our nation’s original sin: slavery, a crime against humanity that we have for far too long failed to full acknowledge, address and come to grips with.”

Biden: In so doing, he remarked that Juneteenth “marks both a long hard night of slavery and subjugation and a promise for a brighter morning to come.” He called it a “day of profound weight and profound power,” and said that the passage of the Act makes us “remember the moral stain, the terrible toll that slavery took on the country and continues to take,” calling slavery “America’s original sin.”

****

Some Representatives understood what was up and voted no since no one in the Senate can apparently look closer at what they’re passing:

Gosar from AZ: “Our country is divided, and the cultural and political Marxists are continuing their relentless efforts to divide this country further,” he wrote, noting that this fake new independence day is the further nationalization of critical race theory.

“I cannot support efforts that furthers racial divisions in this country. We have one Independence Day, and it applies equally to all people of all races,”

****

Rosendale from MT: voted against the bill because the newly named Juneteenth National Independence Day “is the culmination of decades of efforts by the Left to prevent unashamed celebrations of our national story, heritage, and history.” Rosendale said that the day would “inevitably focus on America’s darkest moments.”

“We’re not perfect as a country,” Rosendale wrote, “but we are a great nation, morally, economically, culturally, and in many other ways besides. I will never support efforts to pull down that legacy and replace it with self-hatred.”

****

Of course, there’s no one available at my federal Senators’ offices today.  They have a nice three day weekend.

  1. (#(&%#…. dammit… This is almost as stupid as wanting 'Memorial Day' to include nurses, docs, EMTs, etc…

  2. I think it's them truly trying to break our traditions. If they include a bunch of others for Memorial Day, then it lessens the reverence towards our military. If they create a new Independence Day that denigrates our country then they are trying to lessen the dedication to our true freedoms.

  3. Remember way back when, legislation was openly debated in both chambers before being voted on and there was even a chance for the electorate to discuss the pending legislation with their elected officials??Instead of just cramming shit down our throats?

  4. You mean back when our elected officials actually represented the wishes of the people who elected them instead of thinking themselves our rulers and betters?? I remember….
