I don’t really care about awards shows one way or the other. As a kid I watched them to see the beautiful clothes and the people. As an adult, in my jaded way, all I see is a bunch of self-aggrandizing know-nothing bobble heads and I don’t bother watching.
Maybe it’s because back in the day press around the ‘stars’ was only about their personal lives and their craft–who they were dating and what movie or show were they in that they want everyone to know about. Actors stayed the hell out of politics and religion so as not to alienate the folks they were supposed to be entertaining. And so did reporters covering the entertainment scene.
There are a couple of reasons that I’m even bothering to write this: 1). NBC isn’t going to bother showing the Golden Globes next year; 2). some twink reporter’s treatment of Billy Crystal.
For #1–no big loss really. It’s interesting that NBC is trying to put it under the ‘wokeness’ umbrella, blah blah blah, but I’m pretty sure it’s because the Oscars tanked so badly this year. They don’t want to split their eggs into two baskets and are sticking with Oscar. The era of the awards show is over, killed by its constituents who can’t keep their mouths shut in public.
For #2–Billy hasn’t been on the circuit for a while. So he was probably expecting a usual softball junket type interview–‘how ya doin’, where ya been, tell us about this movie’. What he got was some little NY Post reporter asking him what he thought about cancel culture and the current state of comedy.
Being old school, he wanted very much to keep his own opinions to himself so he floated out a couple of soft comments equating to cancel culture is bad and comedy is hard now.
And those were the headlines of the article rather than anything about his movie (which sounds like a tearjerker since the main theme revolves around a character with dementia).
Soon actors won’t go on the circuit to tout their new movies either. Not sure it’s important, really, but kind of sad.
