Goalpost changes, that is. It’s funny what a difference one week can make. Not funny ha-ha, but funny as in WTF.
Just last week, on March 8, F’ing Fauci said that because there was a plateau of 60,000-70,000 cases a day was unacceptable so states should do as he says and not show any initiative (I’m paraphrasing the second part of course) by reopening.
Today, March 15, he indicates that the US is plateauing at 50,000-65,000 cases.
But his other comments were pretty close:
March 8:
Fauci said European countries could provide a template for the US because their patterns were “usually a couple of weeks ahead of us.”
Europe witnessed a 9% increase in cases in the past week after experiencing a plateau, Fauci said.
March 15:
“And in fact, unfortunately, that’s exactly what is happening in Europe right now. They always seem to be a few weeks ahead of us in the dynamics of the outbreak. Then they plateaued because they pulled back a bit. They thought that they were home free, and they weren’t. And now they’re seeing an increase up.”
The takeaway is that he doesn’t seem to understand what the word ‘plateau’ means in this context. I’m just a girl from flyover country and math is hard and all, but I’m seeing a 16.67% drop in the numbers he’s quoting in one week, using the lower numbers of 50,000 and 60,000. I think that’s pretty significant.
A lot more significant that the 0-1.8% efficacy of mask wearing and lockdowns that they thought was awesome but the rest of us thought was statistical noise.
Gotta give him points for staying on the control-freak-speak though.
