More security theater

If you didn’t have Real ID then you weren’t supposed to be able to fly, according to the law. Because safety or something.

But now the TSA has decided that they’re just going to charge a fee if you don’t have it (or a passport). So for $18 you can break the law and fly and there is official sign off on it.

Of course you’ll have all of your biometrics gathered also (that’s what the fee is for).

It’s not like Real ID is something new. It was signed into law twenty years ago so if you don’t have one by now, I think that perhaps you need to drive, not have a workaround created because you’re a slacker.

As a note, I think the Real ID thing is a pile of dung and another step towards state surveillance and control, but there it is.

  1. I’ve refused to fly since 9/11 gave us the bad joke of performative security theatre that is TSA, all so that the airlines could shirk responsibility (and liability) for ensuring their own security. Their product sucks now anyway, having been reduced to Greyhound of the Skies. Then too, there is the deterioration of the quality of aircraft (Boeing sucks now) and crew via DIE initiatives. Ergo, I don’t need the “real ID”, nor have I gotten one.

I’ll also reiterate here that if one commits a “crime” and the only penalty is a fine, that just means it was legal in exchange for a bribe. While this additional fee isn’t exactly the same thing, the same underlying spirit of gaming the system is what makes it possible to begin with.

  2. Next thing you know, they’ll be requiring a fingerprint and DNA sample to ensure that everyone flies “safe”.

TSA is a freakin’ joke. How many fails have they accumulated over the years with test explosive devises, handguns, knives, and other “suspicious liquids” making it through check points? The only reason for it’s existence is to keep the melanin enhanced employed and as kabuki theater to make the sheep think .gov is “doing something” about terrorists blowing up planes.

How long is THAT going to last now that a mudslime has been elected Mayor of NYFC 25 years after 9/11. Next thing you know there’ll be a mosque adjacent to World Trade Center Plaza.

As for the real ID thingy, I considered not reapplying for my DL when it became a requirement in my state. However after researching the fines, Impoundment of vehicle and possible jail time, I reconsidered.

Briben & co. made the real ID a joke by not only flying illegals all over the country to sanctuary cities and states after they’d been caught or turned them selves in, but also FLYING IN PLANELOADS of illegals from S. America landing in Miami and other southern cities before being further flown to other sanctuary cities nationwide.

Another example of rules for us citizens, but not for illegals by every Demonrat regime ever.

  4. Is this because getting ID is racist but money isn’t?
Thankfully able to quit flying many years ago as I’m allergic to falling out of the sky and other air travel things.

Then the law is aimed at the lower classes.

And $18 is well within the budget of most terrorist organizations.

    1. While that is certainly true, in the original context I was speaking of (being fined for committing a crime) it really most benefits the biggest corporations and their wealthy executives, who never suffer any really punishment for criminal wrongdoing. Worse still, the fine never represents more than a fraction of the amount said criminal conduct netted them in profits, so functionally it’s just a “we made it look like you were punished to shut up the proles” tax.

  8. IIRR- in some blue state (probably Kali) they were selling Real ID’s to illegals.

Texas has been requiring birth certs and SS cards for years.
Both for my CDL renewal and when I dropped it for a Class C when I retired.

  9. BRD–Excellent point on the bribe.

Nemo–TSA is a joke for sure and one of the worst things to come out of 911. And yes, rules for citizens but not illegals.

Matthew–Had to get one in Indiana. If I can avoid flying commercial, I do so. Sometimes it can’t be helped though.

    steves6–Is money ever racist?!?

    Joe–Well said.

    crazyeighter–Agreed.

    BRD–Indeed.

    KurtP–Not surprising….

  10. Get a passport. It is the default universal identification and travel document in the US, issued by the State Department. It even is valid for voter ID, and proves citizenship, all in one whack.
