CERN, the Gold Machine

Scientists used CERN to turn lead into gold.

Between 2015 and 2018, the LHC produced approximately 86 billion gold atoms. While this number appears staggering, the total mass amounts to just 29 picograms—less than a trillionth of a gram.

To put this into perspective, creating even a minuscule piece of jewelry would require trillions of times more gold.

The LHC generates about 89,000 gold atoms per second, but each atom exists for only a fleeting moment before decaying. Recent upgrades have nearly doubled the production rate, yet practical applications remain out of reach.

Which leads me to this video from Hudson Hawk. Da Vinci could not be reached for comment.

  1. Your tax dollars at work… oh yeah- TAXATION IS THEFT ( in it’s current form anyway- the disclaimer is for those who start to drone on about roads and “services”, blah blah blah… while ignoring stewardship of hard earned money and its wanton waste)

  2. That right there ^^. While the taxpayer makes due with what we have leftover after taxes, the club members live large on the heisted gains enriching themselves and their fellow club members.

  3. EVERY element can be converted to EVERY OTHER element if you are able to alter the atomic structure. EVERYTHING is just energy, regardless of how much “mass” something appears to have. As always, the question is what the value is in doing this. Generally speaking, the amount of resources ($$$) involved is infinitely greater than the return. Again why gold and silver have been the money choice for thousands of years (when allowed to circulate FREE of government intervention/taxes/controls, etc.).

  4. TRoy–Not sure how CERN is funded.

K9–It’s interesting science but not sure where the $$ come from.

MrLiberty–Right. Which is why cold fusion seems to be a pipe dream.

  6. i can imagine a case in which an atom in a higher energy state and then decays into gold. the problem with that of course I that mot atoms above gold are stable until uranium. ( I still wonder if all the stories about alchemists were all false?)
