Why is the USDA having to restate the obvious?

I’m pretty sure it was already against the law for illegals to get SNAP benefits/food stamps. But the USDA is having to disseminate ‘strict guidance’ to remind states that they should verify the legal status of recipients.

A memo from Acting Deputy Under Secretary Walk noted, “By law, only United States citizens and certain lawfully present aliens may receive SNAP benefits. The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-193) established that “aliens within the Nation’s borders not depend on public resources to meet their needs.” SNAP is not and has never been available to illegal aliens.”

“To ensure that tax dollars do not fund SNAP benefits to illegal aliens or other ineligible aliens, State agencies should carefully examine their identity and immigration status verification practices and make necessary enhancements.”

Pretty sure the red states are on board. Indiana and Arkansas are also wanting to take pop and candy off the menu for recipients.

I think one additional thing that they should do is go old school on the food stamps–make them look like food stamps and differentiate them from regular credit or debit cards. The change was made several years ago so that people using food stamps wouldn’t be ‘self-conscious’ about them. Also makes them harder to track, right?

  1. I’m disabled and receive SNAP. It breaks down to about $10 per day of food, i.e.,

    10.00
    -.42 for 1 egg
    -.12 for butter used
    9.46 balance

It’s not enough to survive on, but fortunately, I’m frugal, and use it mostly for staples, rice, onions, potatoes, carrots, celery, etc.

When I see illegal aliens filling up shopping carts and using EBT, I can only shake my head. They aren’t receiving the same amount I am.

    Conclusion: Inside job.

  2. Tracking is by the account number, so if the Feds want to track it, they can.

But they really don’t bother. Much like the other government waste, the people in charge of dispersing the funds simply don;t care.

  3. Where does anyone get the idea “the law” exists for anything more than to allow authorities to pick and choose who they go after? There are no laws for Democrats and their supporters that follow the party line. There are a lot of laws for all others.

  4. They get around the law by having a birthright baby, who they use to apply for SNAP, and USDA counts the bodies in the household to determine the amount of assistance. Thus the agency is obeying the law as written.

  5. I remember how South Carolina’s then governorette, Nimrata “Nikki” Haley got around this by signing legislation increasing social services for illegals.

Thank goodness she never became presidentress.

  6. wv–Yeah, they should be taking care of citizens first but they lost the plot.

B–Not their money so they don’t care.

    Tom–It’s unfortunately true.

Brian–I see how they’re doing it, but the benefits should only be calculated for the citizen.

WDS–She would have been a disaster.
