This is just weird

I don’t have cable–I have an antenna that gets me 60-some channels (of which I usually watch 6 or 7). But that’s not the impetus for this post.

One of the commercials that’s running in constant rotation is for speculums (speculae?). You know, the things that Ob/Gyns use during pelvic exams.

They apparently have a new design and want women to buy their own equipment to take to the doctor.

I’m thinking not-so-much but they are putting a bunch of money into advertising….

  1. I only have free stuff on Roku and watch very little other over the air channels (same ones you have) and have never seen those commercials.
I have how ever seen way too many “full body deodorants and really, really, really don’t want to see people putting deodorants on their privates…………………..

  3. It used to be that, as a parent, you’d censor the shows your kids watched. Now you have to watch out for the commercials.

  4. If a patient brought their own medical or surgical instruments into a clinic or pre surgery a doctor if he is smart would not use it, it would their kester on the line it it didn’t work or injured the patient. No doc is gonna use it. There are other speculums besides a gynecological speculums. There are used to spread tissue and muscles, open body orifices, and you have a lot of them internally, etc… But that is damn strange, turn to your wife or girlfriend and say honey, maybe we should get one to have in case of an emergency… Or something gets stuck.

  5. The purpose is to continue putting lots of money into the pockets of the networks so that the piper can call the tune.

  6. I remember at the outset of the HIV / AIDs “epidemic” dentists offering personal handpieces… for your use only. That kinda sorta made sense?

But Speculums? I’ve not yet seen this advertisement but I’ve seen others (as alluded to in previous postings) that are disturbing and certainly strange.

And I’ve seen things on certain streaming services that you can pretty much tell what their parent company is and what they feel their demographic is (certainly not ME) and those adverts are utterly offensive…

So yeah, Zappa nailed it ages age “The slime oozing out from your TV set!”

  7. I suspect this is just the extension of “sell anything/everything to anyone/everyone.”

We are no longer citizens, or even “just people” – we are Sales Opportunities to be marketed to, by everyone who is afraid that if they don’t someone else might get one of our dollars, or heaven forfend, we might keep them.
