There was much rejoicing across the interwebz (at least the conservative parts) at the news that the University of Iowa was shutting down its department of Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies as well as ending its Social Justice major (and the American Studies major too).
Unfortunately, as things happen in academe, it was part of a shell game. Because the University of Iowa is proposing a whole new school in place of a department. A proposal of the creation of the School of Social and Cultural Analysis is in front of the board of regents. If it’s approved, the new school would house Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies, “Latina/o/x Studies,” and Native American and Indigenous Studies.
So, the department of Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies would just be getting a new home, but, would continue. There’s still a chance that the board of regents will put the squish on the creation of a new school at their meeting in February… We’ll see what happens then.
