Civic duty or political ad?

 Oprah did a whole ‘townhall’ thing with Kamala.  I guess the assumption was that she did it for free because she believed in the candidate.

Not so much.  She got paid $1,000,000 for it.  ETA: She said she didn’t, however the Harris campaign paid for the venue, etc…..

While they passed it off as Oprah Winfrey coming in and doing her Civic Duty to host a Town Hall where Kamala Harris would take questions from voters, it now appears like it was nothing more than a paid event to prop up Kamala Harris — and Oprah allegedly got $1 million to do it.

But wait, there’s more….

It could be classified as a political ad.  And since it wasn’t announced as such, it is a probable violation of federal election law.

Now this wouldn’t have mattered if Harris had won, since we previously had the two tiered justice system wherein voting for Dems got you a free pass.

But since she didn’t, and a $1 billion warchest disappeared and Harris’ campaign is $20 million in the red, then it could be a pretty huge problem.

Harris’ campaign spending, IMO, was just a reflection of what the government has been doing in the past 3.75 years.  

ETA:  As a comparison, Michael Douglas hosted a  get-together for Biden (and paid for it) AND gave $100,000 to his campaign in April.

So who’s the believer and who’s the poser?  If a billionaire has to be paid to host something for ‘her candidate’ then that speaks volumes.

    The cool million was paid to Harpo Productions, Oprah's production company. So, her lie that SHE wasn't paid is technically correct, but is a matter of splitting hairs. Now, I don't believe there will be any prosecution of this stuff because Trump's DOJ will handwave it aside, just as he declined to do diddly squat to the clintons.It will be worse still if he decides to take a conciliatory approach by giving her a pass and then going on to pardon hunter the crack fiend. There is a long list of political whores who should rightly be targeted by serious legal action, but almost certainly won't be. And that's too bad, because we could really make a dent in the power of the left if he simply went after them like rabid dogs.

    I don't disagree with your analysis…..just wondering if the Trump administration should concentrate on fixing the government or dabble in righteous righting of political wrongs.

    I get what you're saying, and part of me thinks there is too much serious business that needs attention (and limited time and resources to go at it) for it to make sense to prosecute kamala for violations of FEC rules, but then giving this stuff a pass only ensures there will be more of it in the next election cycle. This permissiveness via selective enforcement has created a monster, and it needs to be put down.

    NO!! No PASSES and No PARDONS! Let some low level attorney take the Campaign FRAUD cases and FINE the campaign accordingly! The LAW is THE LAW!!

    I'm all for prosecutions, but no fines. Prison time or bust for these bastards. If one commits a crime, and the only punishment is a fine, that just means it was legal for a price. That isn't nearly enough of a penalty to disincentivize this stuff.

    Big Ruckus D and Steve–I would like to see the FEC come down on her. She was already told that the war chest sign over was not according to the rules anyway. In for a penny, in for a pound.Anon–Some apparently are, but they are the ones who were mainly living abroad anyway.WDS–AFAIK those numbers (except Oprah's) haven't been confirmed. But yes, if they were true believers, they wouldn't have to have gotten paid.Stevearinob–We saw what they did in the last four…NFO–Exactly. The difference between conservative and liberal I think. We do stuff because we believe in it, they have to get paid to play-pretend belief in anything.Avraham–Looks like he's on the right track.SCBen and BRD–Yes–charge them and jail time. No fines.Bear Claw–There can't be a pendulum swing until selective enforcement ends.
