You've got to speak to them in their own language

Over the weekend there was quite a lively interaction regarding memes and the pet-eating problem in Springfield OH.  Someone asked me (and I do think they were sincere) if I was posting these memes because I thought they were funny or because I really think that Haitians are eating pets in various parts of the country.

To thumbnail both my and another commentors responses, yes, I post them because it is probably happening.  There’s a lot of reasons I think that it is:  the presses’ response, my knowledge of Haitian culture, etc.

But the whole thing got me thinking, especially after the FBI put up a billboard in Springfield in Haitian Creole with a call-in number for Haitians if a US citizen dares to say boo to them.

Putting aside the fact that these people shouldn’t be here anyway…  that’s a given.

The thought is that there is a lack of effective communication about the do’s and don’ts in this country.  I don’t think that billboards in Haitian Creole are effective because most of them can’t read their own language so that was another waste of US taxpayer dollars.

In Finland, they did the ‘no no square’ Tik Tok that cost over two million Euros to produce in order to try to keep what they call migrants from raping Finnish women (and probably some men).  The no no square dance is the epitome of ineffective communication because it’s geared to Finnish people–not migrants.  Anyone from a non-Western culture will not understand the point.  And truly it’s not really understandable by anyone who isn’t Finnish.  No no square, WTF..

Here it is, just in case you mercifully missed it in the last four years (my apologies):

Because a twenty something goat herder from the outer parts of rural Whereeverstan is going to figure out that the video means that you shouldn’t rape anyone.  It’s set to kitchy Euromusic and of course men had to be in the video because diversity or something.
A much more effective video would have been an ethnic looking guy grabbing a woman and then getting shot and buried or having parts cut off.
It’s called ‘speaking to your audience’.  But political correctness won’t let that happen.  Because we can’t acknowledge that different cultures are, well, different.

Eaten by hogs? Chipper shredders? What would it take to convince the fox not to eat the chicken standing in front of it?

  7. My wife asked why I thought it was probable that Haitians were killing local pets. The local officials and migrant right groups said it wasn't so.1) People in the 3rd World, don't have pets as a whole. They eat any protein they can get. I've seen that practice more than once.2) Animal sacrifice is part of many different Caribbean religious practices.3) Did any of the officials asked Haitians if they did eat dogs or cats? I doubt that because they wouldn't like a answer in the affirmative. Better for them just look aghast at the questioner.

  8. There are well documented, on film, instances of Haitians eating human flesh in Haiti and they are all within the last year or so. So Haitians are fine with eating each other but draw the line at eating cats and dogs? Is that what they want you to believe and/or is it credible? In other news, I have bridge in Brooklyn for sale …Phil B
