Over the weekend there was quite a lively interaction regarding memes and the pet-eating problem in Springfield OH. Someone asked me (and I do think they were sincere) if I was posting these memes because I thought they were funny or because I really think that Haitians are eating pets in various parts of the country.
To thumbnail both my and another commentors responses, yes, I post them because it is probably happening. There’s a lot of reasons I think that it is: the presses’ response, my knowledge of Haitian culture, etc.
But the whole thing got me thinking, especially after the FBI put up a billboard in Springfield in Haitian Creole with a call-in number for Haitians if a US citizen dares to say boo to them.
Putting aside the fact that these people shouldn’t be here anyway… that’s a given.
The thought is that there is a lack of effective communication about the do’s and don’ts in this country. I don’t think that billboards in Haitian Creole are effective because most of them can’t read their own language so that was another waste of US taxpayer dollars.
In Finland, they did the ‘no no square’ Tik Tok that cost over two million Euros to produce in order to try to keep what they call migrants from raping Finnish women (and probably some men). The no no square dance is the epitome of ineffective communication because it’s geared to Finnish people–not migrants. Anyone from a non-Western culture will not understand the point. And truly it’s not really understandable by anyone who isn’t Finnish. No no square, WTF..
Here it is, just in case you mercifully missed it in the last four years (my apologies):
