I have questions–Alaska Planet Fitness guy in the women's locker room

I think by now everyone has heard about the woman who got kicked out of Planet Fitness in Alaska ostensibly because she complained about a man in the women’s locker room.

But I have questions.  I’m going to preface them with the fact that I do not think that stating ‘I’m queer LGB’ should be a get-out-of-jail-free card to allow men to be in women’s spaces.  I don’t think he should have been in there.

But here’s the deal.  The woman got her membership revoked because she took a picture of him in the locker room.  Which should be.  No pictures of people in the locker room (or elsewhere) without their permission.  She could have waited at the front desk and pointed him out as he was leaving rather than take a picture.

But I do need to wonder about the specifics.  The story indicates that he was ‘shaving’ and there was a frightened little girl in a towel in the corner of the locker room.

  • Where was he shaving?  Both physical location–at the sinks?, and where on his body?
  • If he was shaving his face, was he otherwise naked?
  • If he was shaving other parts, why would he be doing that in a semi-public space?
  • My Planet Fitness has separate/private shower stalls and changing rooms for those who don’t want to change in the main room.  Is this Planet Fitness similarly situated?
  • Could he have been shaving in private?
  • Where were the little girls’ parents?  Why haven’t they spoken up? Why was she there unattended?
None of these questions impacts the man in the women’s locker room situation and the fact that he shouldn’t have been there.  But I do think that context counts.  And I do think that if she was taking pictures of people, she should have had her membership revoked.
The Planet Fitness policy officially reads: “If a serious concern or significant doubt about the bona fides of a person’s transgender or nonbinary status/identity arises and which the team member can articulate, the team member shall address their concerns with the member.
“If discussion with the member fails to resolve the serious concern or doubt, the club may ask for external evidence of the member’s asserted gender identity. If it is confirmed that a member is acting in bad faith and improperly asserts a gender identity, they may be asked to leave and their membership may be terminated.”
It’ll be interesting to see how this shakes out.  They are on the edge of getting Bud Lighted.

  1. Normal people should just avoid Planet Fitness and any business that caters to this insanity. Assuming these mentally ill people comprise only 1 or 2% of the population, no business could financially survive a 98-99% loss in customer traffic.

  4. “Improperly asserts a gender identity…” What the hell does that mean? Sorry, if you are a man, stay the hell out of the women's locker room. Indeed, why is ANYONE pandering to the whims of a mentally ill 0.1% (or less) of the population?…ESPECIALLY when it involves the safety of women???

  8. Just be careful in your push for their genital mutilation that you realize that NOTHING can alter the permanent ADVANTAGE the Y chromosome gives to men structurally, muscularly, lung capacity wise, etc. It is one thing to be talking about using a locker room and quite another to be talking about stealing scholarships, trophies, accolades, etc. from women by being a CHEATING MAN. Genital mutilation is NOT the answer, so don't encourage more men to go that route. They need to figure out why they are TERRIFIED of being men. I suspect much of it has to do with the non-stop WAR on men that begins in pre-school and certainly K-12. One way or the other, unless these core traumas and fears are understood, faced, and transcended, they will follow these unfortunate boys/men throughout their entire (likely suicide-shortened) lives.

  9. MrLiberty–I think it was said as a deterrent since most will not take that route. There is proof that males having their penises cut off makes them twice as likely to commit suicide. It doesn't affect their musculature so even that shouldn't make them eligible to play in women's sports. And yes, it is quite likely that the war on men is the cause of some of the psychosis.

FYI, Planet Fatness operates in a franchise environment, and if you look closely, when you see mutiple PFs in an area, check the records – it's almost always one investor group owning multiples, not dissimilar to how McDonalds operates. Corporate PF supplies the franchise rights and the equipment – for a cost – and finances some, occasionally most, of it. Positive cash flow per facility is the object, and around 30% +/- actual participation is the goal. Lots of people sign up, a large segment stop going after a while but leave the minimal monthly charge on their credit cards “because I belong to a gym” sounds good, and they convince themselves they'll go exercise tomorrow. If half the people who signed up ever showed up all at once it would be so crowded the facility would be unusable. The ones who are there every day use it for exercise and as a social center, and probably don't care if 3-legged green giraffes are in the locker rooms. Outside that core group, the attitudes are different. Convince over half of the non-goers to drop it and the deal collapses, but six months later a different investor group will jump in to try it again. Lather, rinse, repeat.
