New skill–achieved

I did something this week that I haven’t done before–I fixed my dryer.

It was squeaking and unlike some, I know that you can’t just turn up the radio while doing laundry and hope that it goes away.  And I had the week’s laundry waiting to be done.

B was out of town, so I went to a local appliance place where the owner is an acquaintance to get some advice (and maybe the names of repair guys that he trusts).  I walked out with new parts and a walkthrough of how to get to the squeaky bits. Also with a warning that the edges are sharp as a razor.

You can’t get to the back of the dryer from the back on my model–has to be through the front which necessitated taking the top and front off, untensioning the belt, and taking the drum out.

Managed all of that, cleaned everything off (and found a bunch of change), vacuumed all of the lint, replaced the wheels and started buttoning it up.

Re-tensioning the belt was interesting because the drum kept falling on my head.  So I propped it up with some handy snow boots.  Needs must and all that.

But I had problems getting the front back on since I also had to hold the drum in place (couldn’t leave the boots in there unfortunately).

B was back in town and graciously lent a hand and showed me the little things I needed to get it all done.  Many thanks for that!

And no squeaks!!  So feeling pretty good about it.  Only three cuts–one deep one but not as bad as when I was helping a friend sell knives on weekends and got bit.

  1. Excellent! You waded in and got it done. Kudos to you for not being intimidated by the guts of that machine.

  12. Well done MC!The button to open the door on the microwave popped out a couple of weeks ago. YouTube, a little perseverance and remembering to take some pics of wiring pre-disassembly and voila, repaired! Kids (and some adults) today might live in a disposible society, but I refuse to. Besides, there was nothing else wrong with the microwave.Gotta agree with the mechanics gloves LPT, cheaper than stitches.Bonus: 2.8 mag earthquake here this morning. I think that's # 50 or so in the last 14 months here.
