Slamming the receiver down was expressive, and it helped, but sometimes it just Required more. I don't think I ever needed more than three. Amazingly tough stuff they were made of.

Matthew–Thanks!Justin–I don't think it was possible to destroy them. And yes, sometimes multiple slams were necessary! They'll never make a cell phone sturdy enough to handle that.Cederq–That was for obscene phone callers–no caller ID so they were much more prevalent.
